Position: Diesel and Gasoline Engine Mechanic
Summary:
As a Diesel and Gasoline Engine Mechanic, you will be responsible for repairing, maintaining, and overhauling diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, and differentials, as well as various automotive vehicles. Your role will be critical in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the company's fleet and supporting their commitment to providing top-notch energy services to the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Receive job orders and discuss them with supervisors, vehicle operators, or other company personnel.
- Ascertain problems and plan work procedures. Visually inspect vehicles for damage, malfunctions, or service needs. Conduct test drives and record observations and estimates.
- Repair, rebuild, overhaul, service, or replace components and parts of gasoline or diesel engines, such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, bearings, crankshafts, starters, and pumps.
- Service exhaust systems, including mufflers and exhaust pipes.
- Perform repairs or replacements on transmissions, differentials, and other vehicle units.
- Solder and repair leaks in radiators and cooling system hoses. Service and repair fuel oil hoses and assemblies, ensuring they are free from leaks or wear.
- Troubleshoot and repair fuel injection system problems, including pumps, injectors, and electronic controls. Replace defective parts and calibrate components.
- Install, calibrate, and time ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels. Perform related repairs on alternators, starters, batteries, and voltage regulators.
- Conduct preventive maintenance on light and heavy-duty vehicles and cars following the scheduled program.
- Respond to road service calls, analyze vehicle breakdowns, and determine the best available means for repair or assistance.
- Handle tire repair and replacement, brake adjustments, shock absorber repairs, and front-end alignment.
- Mend damaged body and fenders through hammering out or filling in dents and welding broken parts.
- Replace and adjust headlights and perform installations and repairs of accessories like radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
- Be knowledgeable about and comply with federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FCMCSR) and Hazardous Materials Safety Regulations (HMSR). Perform repairs and maintenance in line with all applicable D.O.T. requirements and prepare necessary paperwork.
- Prepare written reports of work performed, parts used or repaired, time required, and remaining problems to be addressed.
- Adhere to spill and leak policies, including the Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures Plan (SPCC Plan). Take emergency action in case of accidents, spills, leakages, or fires. Follow proper exhaust ventilation procedures when running engines inside the garage facility. Use all required safety guards, equipment, and devices, such as hard hats, goggles, safety shoes, ear protection, respirators, and gloves.
Qualifications:
- Two to four years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read and interpret documents like safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Proficient in writing routine reports and correspondence. Effective communication skills with other employees of the company.
- Proficient in basic mathematical calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in various units of measure.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and the capability to handle a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Able to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driving License or the ability to take the test to upgrade the current license to a valid Commercial Driving License.
- Knowledge and ability to pass tests for Hazardous Material handling, tank endorsement, and general knowledge. Possess a safe driving record.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and talk or hear while performing duties.
- Frequent standing, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, reaching with hands and arms, and climbing or balancing.
- Occasional tasting or smelling may be required.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required, including close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
Work Environment:
- Regular exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
- Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock.
- The work environment is usually loud.
